Amed. A great overview of a quiet neighborhood in Bali. Top 35 cafes, massages, snorkeling and sports

I spent about 7 months in Amed, leaving several times to Viziran and other countries, but always returning to this paradisiacal place.

In this article I want to tell you why I lived in Bali specifically in Amed and not the popular Changgu, Ubud or Seminyak. Where can you eat good food? What are the prices here? Where to eat good food? Where to go? And secret places tourists don't know about.

Photo from personal archive during 7 months of living in Amedah

This article is not going to be about anything where I have not personally been. It does not pretend to be objective. It is not another guide about Bali with great photos, but my subjective experience.

Let's start with cafes and restaurants

Berina rice terrace is a coffee shop at the entrance

Against a backdrop of mountains and rice paddies. The only thing on the menu is fried bananas, coffee and tea. But fuck, it's the best fried bananas, coffee and tea in the world. If you think how they get so many reviews, you just haven't eaten their bananas.

We're having coffee in front of the rice paddies at sunset. You can pick up the hats right there, and the owner will take pictures

The fried bananas are the signature recipe of the owner who harvests rice from the fields. Coffee and tea are also grown here, next to the warung. Bananas also grow right on the property.

Bananas are 20,000 rupees, a huge 300 ml kettle of tea is only 15,000, and divine coffee is 25,000. They pour not a cup, but a whole teapot. One coffee is enough for three people.

Copicotta. Breakfasts

Cozy place near the ocean. One of the few cafes where it is pleasant to sit in the afternoon without air conditioning. Breakfasts from 60k rupees.

Photo during a live networking meeting in Amed. On the right is pudding and fruit slices

Food. Be sure to try the strawberry pudding with chia seeds. I've taken it over 50 times. The fruit platter is also delicious. After my workouts, I often ordered the "pasta bif". Delicious breakfast combos from Rs 60k.

Rimba Classica in Amed

This place should be first on your list. The staff has cute uniforms with ears. The interior is comfortable and convenient. No air conditioning.

Photo from open access reviews in google maps

The ice cream alone is worth the trip to Amed. Be sure to try the mango and coconut flavors. From drinks, I recommend the fruit cocktail "Indian Dream". Appetizers - vrapes and paninis. They also serve great burgers, banana bread and waffles.

Warung Melasti. Delicious fish

Warung with a view of the volcano and the sunset. The owner is friendly, knows a little Russian and will cook anything you want.

Sunset photo from personal archive

Food: This place serves the most delicious grilled fish not only in Amed, but in all of Bali. The main secret is in the sauce. Be sure to ask for orange juice without sugar if you like something sour!

Gusto Resto & Cafe - Italian restaurant

Spaghetti with seafood, delicious desserts. Delicious shrimp, fish (except tuna), mahi mahi with pizza. Many people like the seafood pizza.

Be sure to sit at the table on the right near the tree with red flowers. You will have a romantic evening.

Food and friends

Greek salad, chicken or fish with sweet and sour sauce. Try an ice cream smoothie with banana and chocolate.

Warung Sabar - local cuisine

We call it the "red tablecloth cafe". Because it has real red tablecloths:)
The welcoming host of the warung himself will welcome you and delight you with delicious homemade Balinese food. Be sure to try the fresh seafood platter for two.

Small Time Cooks - top burgers in Amedah

In addition to delicious burgers, there are tasty smoothies, lemonades, salads and sweet potatoes.

Meeting Point. Freshes and salads

Delicious freeshes. I liked the "Refreshing Mint", mint flavored. A big hearty portion of salad with tender tuna and an appetizing sandwich.

LA BOTTEGA Melasti - for dinner

I can't recommend individual dishes or the food in general. It's just average for a place like this. It has a cozy atmosphere for a candlelit dinner by the ocean. If you want to wear a new dress in Bali or just have a romantic dinner in Amed with the sound of the waves, make a reservation in advance.

Warung Osin - delicious local food in the center of the city

4 tables, classic local cuisine. Take the first course on the menu.

Mathis Lodge, Amed - Italy in Bali, with pool and villas

The only downside is the road, but they have a shuttle service, delicious pasta! The price is above average but worth it. If possible stay at this villa for a couple of days - I'll be jealous of you.

Cafe overlooking the sunset:

In Amed, many cafes have beautiful sunset views, but not everywhere the food is good. In this list of places to visit just for the sunset.

View point resto lahangan. View of the volcano

I call it "Cafe Goose" for its panoramic goose-shaped ledge. A must-visit place on the way to Lahangan. Friendly staff and waiters.

https://youtu.be/3R0_dFdr6dw - Video from VIEW POINT RESTO LAHANGAN Cafe at sunset near LAHANGAN SWEET in Bali

  • Joli Best View Cafe
  • Warung Asri - A quiet, pleasant cafe near Lipah Beach.
  • Amed Stop Inn Rooftop Restaurant and Bar - views of the volcano, palm trees and mountains.
  • Blue Earth Village - Comfortable poufs, only view is good, food not so much. Better to book tables with a view in advance, don't plan to eat there, order cocktails, watch the sunset and go to dinner elsewhere.
  • Waeni's Sunset View Hotel - Ocean view, cafe with hotel in one location.
  • Sunset Point Amed Bali - If you dream of dancing to loud beats, this is the only place to do it in Amed. Here you can admire the sunset while relaxing in the infinity pool to the music. Personally, I don't like the noise, but if you're up for it, go to partying Changgu.

Nice picnic spot near the ocean

Cafe for air- conditioned work:

MD Amed

If you want to work overlooking the rice paddies, looking up at the volcano without anyone distracting you, this is the perfect place. This is the only place where you can have zooming meetings while admiring the stunning sunset overlooking Agung Volcano.

Photo taken from publicly available google maps reviews

The internet is not fast, great lag, you definitely won't play "Dota". The video link for zoom pulls, but you will be a little blurry.

Food: great selection of drinks, delicious coffee. I love their red velvet latte as well as the specialty double burger. The menu is monotonous, a lot of fatty stuff, if you don't want to bother, just have the nasi goreng :)

Good Stuff Cafe

Nice place, the owners are European. Nice atmosphere, good internet, but sometimes there are very noisy companies. They are open until 22:00, but you can sit down on the veranda all night - ask them to keep the lights and wifi on. The main thing is to turn everything off after you leave.

Photo taken from publicly available google maps reviews

Food: breakfasts, delicious coffee and migoreng. Divine cheesecake and prawn skewer (shrimp on skewers). There is a water cooler, just make sure it's clean and no mold. If you are vegan, you will find vegan burgers for yourself.

People Point

Working atmosphere, water cooler, waiters refill the water themselves. For half a year the internet did not work only 1 time, when the light went out in the whole neighborhood. Here is not only the most stable internet in Amed, but also high speed (over 50 Mbps) with minimal latency (low ping).

Photo taken from publicly available google maps reviews

Food: all breakfasts are delicious, especially the "egg florentine" and "fish and chips". Tasty "strawberry pancakes", hot cappuccino and cocoa. Great selection of tuna dishes. Large portions. I don't recommend the salads. Once tried even tuna pizza - delicious.

Oneway Espresso

Atmospheric coffee shop with delicious breakfasts and a comfortable place to work. More than once the internet slowed down, but the staff are Balinese, so they don't want to do anything about it. So while working, I had to move to the nearest coffee shop.

Photo inside the cafe

Food: the head barista has several awards, so the coffee here is delicious, I recommend the iced coffee separately. Futomaki sushi with salmon. Caesar salad ordered once 10. If you make it to breakfast before 11:00, you should definitely give it a try.

Snorkeling, diving and freediving

Photo of diving with friends before diving with instructor Ivan Rubenkov

Diving. Russian diving instructor Ivan. Dived with him 5 times. Works in a German diving center. They have been working for a long time, good service, almost all clients from Germany. Telegram Ivan @vegvan_ya Recommended.

The main beaches and dive locations:

Photo from Lipah beach in Amed. Bali

Jemeluk Beach

Right near this place there is a rental of all snorkeling equipment. For 50k you get a full set. You can get it here, and then ride a bike to any location.

Lipah Beach

More opportunity to see turtles. More suited to a classic beach. Sand and sun beds.

Japanese shipwreck

At a depth of a few meters. Grab your mask and go snorkeling.

American shipwreck

The USAT Liberty wreck lies on its starboard side only thirty meters from shore, so divers dive on it directly from the beach. The upper part of the ship is only 3-5 meters from the surface, the lower part at 28m.

From the entertainment:

I recommend trying snorkeling at night. It's a different world! There's also freediving, but I'm like and you didn't make it - you have to get up early for that. I don't wake up that early, but if you can for the sake of fishing at 5am, you are welcome. Check out the pics on the internet you can catch some big catches!

There are many mountains around, a paradise for trekking and bike riding enthusiasts.

Sports, SPA and Massages

A boxing gym overlooking Agung

Group classes in the morning at 10:00 am and in the evening at 6:00 pm at sunset. There is an outdoor boxing ring overlooking the volcano. You can pay 50,000 rupees and train on your own.

Photos of my boxing classes with friends. Individual lessons

I did not like that the organizer is not obligatory. There is no normal schedule, one day there are classes, the next day there are not. You can find out that a class is canceled, 10 minutes after it was expected to start. I had an argument with him. If you are more tolerant of people, I recommend trying it at least 1 time for background. Just be prepared for unexpected cancelations.

A video of the class during sunset with the backdrop of Agung Volcano

The Lift Bali - Fitness, Lifestyle, Health

They opened a new gym at the Ameda Center, but I had already left there by then. My friends have tried training in this gym and recommend it.

Screenshot of the new fitness center's Instagram profile: www.instagram.com/theliftbali/

99 Double Nine Gym

Unlimited season ticket for 150,000 rupiah per month. Located 15 minutes from Amed, designed for locals. No air conditioning, but surprisingly it doesn't interfere with the workout. The machines are old, but they have all the necessary equipment. There are no queues.

Masseuse Ari

"One of the best massages I've ever tried" is exactly the kind of feedback I've heard from many at Amed.

When I got to it, I realized why. The massage bed on the second floor 5 meters from the ocean. I lay there for an hour and a half with the sound of the waves.
+62 852-3799-8555, the owner of the salon takes notes. Be sure to ask specifically for the masseuse Ari, do it a couple days in advance. The location is next to this cafe.

Massage SPA-salon

Inside is quiet, two waterfalls and several masseuses. They have a whole menu, probably 30-50 types of massage. I've been more than 5 times. Unlike "masseuse Ari", you can come without an appointment, along with friends or a couple. The location is in the center of Amed opposite Rimba.

Yogika: bathhouse, sauna, yoga and cafe

Sauna overlooking the volcano. Can be booked individually for a group of 6 people or more, if I'm not mistaken. Common days Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 18.00 to 20.00. There is an ice font, you need to order separately.

Barbershop. Men's haircuts

Budget barbershop. Barber with good service. For 5 haircuts he always cut my hair the way I wanted and even better. Does everything quickly and professionally.

He has little experience with beards, so was surprised when I asked him to remove my large beard completely, but did it clearly.

Attractions

Lahangan Sweet

Lahangan, insta-tree, is my favorite place. Despite its popularity on instagram, there are few people there, quiet and peaceful, even on weekends. I've been there about 10 times and each time because of the different weather and clouds, the place opened up differently.

Personal archive photo from the main tree against the backdrop of Agung Volcano

500 meters before Lhakhangan, there will be a sharp right turn uphill. You may be asked to pay for a ride in a car. It is better to leave your bike there and walk on your own, enjoying the beautiful mountain view.

But if you like extreme, you can ride your bike all the way to the top, but be careful - in the rain you may have an accident. On the way back, I recommend you to stop by the cozy "Cafe Goose".

Camping and sunrise meeting at Lahangan Sweet

This is the main discovery in six months of living in Amed. My 6 friends and I rented a camping spot with comfortable tents and a campfire right on Lahangan and met the sunrise there.

For 200k rupees we got a ready equipped 2-bed tent, fire wood, wifi with sockets. Local rangers organized and arranged everything. We also ordered food delivery by courier from a cafe in the center of Amed.

To book an overnight camping trip, you can write directly on WhatsApp to
+62 877-3590-8092, find current contacts on https://www.lahangansweet.com or do it on site.

Lempuyang Temple, Balinese gateway

At the foot of the mountain there is a parking lot, from there a bus takes you to the top, and then you have to walk about 500 meters more.

Photo from personal archive at Lempuyang Temple

To save energy, money and time, it is better to get there by bike yourself. To do this, when approaching the parking lot, go straight ahead without turning off according to the signs. The locals will stop you, don't pay attention to them, pretend that you are here for the hundredth time and are visiting a familiar resident, not a temple.

You need to take the ticket only by ticket on the spot. Do not wait in line for 3 hours. Take the ticket and go to see other sights - there are several kilometers of them. When you have walked around the whole mountain, come back, the queue will be just right for your ticket.

Savana in Bali (Savana Tianyar)

Bali is not just about waterfalls, volcanoes, palm trees and rice paddies. A 40-minute drive north from Amed towards Lovina will take you as if you were in Africa. Welcome to the savannah!

Panoramic Savana Tianyar at sunset. The photo shows Agung Volcano and yellow wheat- like fields :)

Plan 30 minutes for a photo shoot. There is no other view like this in Bali.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace

It's a popular tourist spot. You can feel like Lara Croft, a tomb explorer, but without the tombs themselves.

There are many beautiful water structures here. If Catherine II had lived in Bali instead of St. Petersburg, the analog of Peterhof would look something like this! There are tourists who come here from central Changgu or Kuta thinking that this is Amed, see only the palace and go back.

Photo of the water palace from google maps reviews

If you are only in Amed for 2-3 days, you can skip this attraction. But if you stay for at least 2 weeks and it's not the first time you've come here, it makes sense to visit it.

Virgin Beach. Top beach in Bali

One of the best beaches in Bali. In Amed all the beaches are black with volcanic pebbles. An hour drive from Amed and you are in a paradise beach like a postcard.

Photo of Virgin Beach, Karangasem, Bali

The beach is payable, you will be asked a token payment upon entry.

Lighthouse in Bali

This is the only lighthouse in Bali. If you are brave and willing to wake up early in the morning to meet the sunrise, you are welcome.

I recommend arriving a couple hours before sunset, making arrangements with the guard and going upstairs.

Photo of the Lighthouse in Amed "Batu Manak"

Along the way you will stop many times to admire the beautiful views and slow down at dangerous turns and potholes. So add an extra 15-20 minutes to admire the nature and drive carefully :)

Vegetable stores and stores:

  • Chulik, main turn to Amed from the central road: https://maps.app.goo.gl/PSwg8pvmHV9x4h2q9
  • Melasti district, small shop: https://maps.app.goo.gl/aEdYnZeMkYNeFE6Q7
  • Vegetable shop in the center of Amed (forgot the location, ask locals)
  • Two Indomarkets. You can withdraw money there. ATMs work every once in a while, but it is better to withdraw cash at the cash desk via permata.
  • Solaluna Mart supermarket. More choice than in a regular indomarket.
  • ADIshop. A lot of goods that are not available anywhere else, nicely decorated, like in Europe, the price tag is a bit higher. There is a bakery and an ATM inside.

If you like snorkeling, diving, appreciate peace and quiet, want to see rice fields, volcano, mountains, palm trees and ocean in one place - welcome to Amed.

Usually people come to Amed for 1-3 days to see a few sights and leave back to the central part of the island, as they think there is nothing to do here. But this article is for those who are thinking of moving to live in a new corner of Bali.
